History of Karla Caves
Situated on the northern side of the Indrayani Valley, Karle Caves are situated atop a high spur of hills. Karle Caves, a significant rock structure, showcase the craftsmanship and dedication of their creators. Caves were constructed over two distinct periods: the 2nd century BC to the 2nd century AD, and then again from the 5th century to the 10th century AD. The oldest of these caves dates back to 160 BC. Karle Caves are situated along a prominent trade route that facilitated trade between the Deccan region and the Arabian Sea.
One of India’s largest and most spectacular prayer halls, the Karla Caves Complex, is unparalleled. Chaityagrigha is divided among the eight caves that are situated at the center, along with the grand prayer hall. These prayer halls are designed in such a way that light falls directly through strategically placed windows.
Architecture of Karla Caves
Creating a tranquil atmosphere for worship and contemplation, Chaityagriha consists of an apsidal hall and a verandah. Divided into a nave and two aisles by elegant rows of pillars, the hall is crowned by a semi-circular arrangement behind the stupa. Walls are decorated with sculptures that depict both human and animal forms. At the center stands the stupa, a focal point of the Chiatyagriha.
