Revered as one of the 12 Jyotirlingas shrines in India, Aundha Nagnath temple is an ancient hindu temple that is located in the Hingoli district, Aurangabad, Maharashtra. The temple is dedicated to lord shiva and is a testament to the rich heritage of Maharashtra.
In hinduism, the Jyotirlingas hold immense significance and Aundha Nagnath temple is proudly one of them. Maharashtra have number of Jyotirlings shrines, including Grisheshwar, Trimbakeshwara, Vaidyanath and Bhimshankar. It draws thousands of visitors from all corners of the country.
History and Architecture
The Aundha Nagnath Temple is more than just an architectural marvel; it’s a revered place of worship for Hindus across the nation. Lord Shiva, in his form as a Jyotirlinga, graces the temple premises. The temple is intricately linked with the lives of saints like Visoba Khechara, Namdev, and Jnanesvar, who found their spiritual path here.
Spread over an impressive area of 60,000 square feet, Aundha Nagnath temple stands as a marble of architecture. It reflect the architectural style of the Peshwa era and built in style of Hemadpanthi. Initially, it was constructed by Seuna (the Yadava dynasty) in the 13th century. During this time, Auranzeb vandalised the temple, but thanks to the Queen of Maratha Malwa Kingdom, Rani Ahayabai Holkar restored the temple to its glory.
Unlike the other temple, where Nandi statues face the lingam,. Here in the Aundha Nagnath temple , the Nandi is situated behind the shrine. Its adds an air of mystique and remains a puzzle to this day.
