Vikatgard Fort, also known as Peb Fort, is a tourist destination for trekkers, especially those living near Mumbai. The Vikatgad Fort is an ancient fort that is well-connected to other places. Near Neral, it is situated at a distance of 3.5 km from Neral Railway Station and 88 km from Mumbai.
History and Legends
Vikatgad looks similar to the elephant-headed God, Lord Ganesh. Additionally, there is a small shrine at the base of the fort dedicated to the Goddess Pebi. The name of the fort, Peb Fort, is derived from this. The fort was very important during Shivaji times, which further adds a touch of significance. In some historical references, the Maratha ruler Shivaji Maharaja used the fort caves to store grains.
Vikatgad is a series of caves that are meticulously maintained by the disciples of Swami Samartha. In a meditation chamber, visitors must crawl through a narrow passage before reaching here. A serene ambiance with a tiled floor makes it the perfect place to sit and meditate in tranquility.
The temple dedicated to the revered Saint, Swami Samartha, is another highlight of Vikatgad Fort. Visitors can find the Padukas, or footwear, worn by this great sian. Standing at the temple, you can watch the panoramic views of the entire Neral and Kajrat regions. It’s worthwhile for natural lovers and photography enthusiasts.
The Trekking Experience
Spanning a distance of 3.5 km, a trek to Vikatgad Fort commences from Neral and takes around 2 hours to reach the fort. Passing through a diverse landscape of grassy meadows, water streams, and enchanting forests adds a touch of excitement to the journey. Offering an exhilarating challenge to adventure seekers, the trek is rated moderate to difficult.
There is an alternative route that you can use while descending from Vikatgad Fort. It’s via the Matheran route, which is relatively popular and easier to navigate. The trail leads to the Matheran railway track and takes approximately 1 hour. A further 50-minute walk along the track leads to the bustling Matheran main road.
