About Don Bosco Museum

The Don Bosco Museum in Shillong is one of the most significant cultural institutions in Meghalaya and the entire Northeast region of India. Known as the “Centre of Indigenous Cultures of Northeast India,” it showcases the rich heritage, traditions, crafts, and lifestyle of the diverse tribes inhabiting the seven northeastern states.

The museum is a hub for researchers, tourists, and culture enthusiasts who wish to gain a deeper understanding of tribal life in Meghalaya and beyond. With seven floors of well-curated exhibits and interactive displays, it is often referred to as the largest cultural museum in Asia dedicated to indigenous communities.

Attractions and Highlights

The museum houses 17 galleries that cover different aspects of tribal culture, including handicrafts, traditional attire, musical instruments, weapons, agriculture, religion, and housing styles. Each gallery is arranged with care, offering a visual journey through the history and daily life of Northeast India’s tribes.

One of the most unique attractions is the Skywalk on the rooftop, which provides panoramic views of Shillong city. The museum also features multimedia presentations, paintings, and dioramas that vividly bring tribal folklore and history to life. Its educational approach makes it not only a tourist destination but also a valuable knowledge hub.

Cultural Importance

The Don Bosco Museum plays a vital role in preserving and promoting tribal heritage at a time when modernization threatens to overshadow indigenous traditions.

It is more than just a museum; it is a platform for cultural dialogue between the northeast and the rest of India, ensuring that tribal customs, oral traditions, and art forms continue to be recognized and respected.
