Astrotourism is a growing niche in the tourism sector. The excitement of watching stars and celestial events and learning about astronomy and space science is a profound experience. The wonders of the universe give us a deep understanding of our place in the cosmos.
Naturally, agrotourism destinations are located in remote areas with minimal light pollution such as deserts and mountains, as well as space centers and observatories.
In India, the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences is an autonomous research institute located at Manora Peak in Nanital, Uttarakhand. It was established in 1954 as the state observatory and renamed a state observatory in 1956. Later in 2004, it was converted into an autonomous research institute and renamed the Adyabhata Research Institute of Observation Sciences (ARIES) in honor of the ancient Indian astronomer. It now comes under the Department of Science and Technology(DST)
The institute is equipped with many telescopes equipment that helps in conducting research activities, The most prominent among these include
Devasthal optical telescope: it’s the largest telescope in Asia with a 3.6-meter-diameter primary mirror. The telescope is used to watch infrared images of stars, galaxies, and celestial objects.
Himalayan Chandra telescope: It is a 2 meters wide optical telescope that is used to study galaxies and planetary system
Solar tower telescope: As the name suggests, the instrument is used to study the sun’s magnetic field, solar flares, and other phenomena.
Aries boasts extensive in-house facilities to meet the needs of its electrical, mechanical, and optical instruments. The workshop is well equipped with the latest tools and technology to ensure the instruments remain in top condition.
In addition to this, Aries has a state-of-the-art computer and a library that contains a treasure trove of over 10,000 volumes of research journals on astronomy, and these facilities help to keep Aries forward-looking in the field of research and enable scientists to contribute to the global scientific community.
