Introduction of Naina Devi Temple

Naina Devi Temple is an important pilgrimage place that is located in the Kumaon region of Nainital, Uttarakhand. It is situated on the northern end of Nainital Lake near the Nainital Boat House Club, which is at a distance of 2 km from the Tallital bus stand.

Mythology story

According to the legend, the Naina devi temple is a place where the eyes of Naina Devi fall when Shiva carries the body of Sati. The word Naina symbolizes Sati’s eyes.

History of Naina Devi Temple

The history of the temple dates back to the 15th century. In 1842, an idol of Nina Devi was installed by a devotee named Moti Shah, but unfortunately, a major landslide hit the temple in 1880. It was reinstalled in 1883 and the present structure remains the same to date.

Architecture

The temple complex consists of the main gate. After entering the premises, there is a big peepal tree on the left side. The main shrine of the temple consists of three deities, the center one represents the two eyes of Naina, the left side is of Maata Kali Devi, and the right one is the idol of lord hanuman. Two lions guard the main shrine of the temple.

Festival and Celebrations

During the day of Bhardrapad Shukla Ashtami, a big fair is organized that runs for 8 days on the premises of Naina Devi Temple. On this occasion, Goddess Nanda devi along with her sister is immersed in the holy water. This ceremony has been taking place since 1918. During this time many people or devotees come for darshan and celebrate other occasions like Chaitra and the Navratri fair with great zeal.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit is during the months of March through June and September through November, when the weather is pleasant. It is advisable to visit the temple early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid long lines and crowds.

Naina Devi Temple is well-connected by road. One can take a taxi, or bus, or drive from nearby cities like Delhi, Haridwar, or Dehradun. The distance between Delhi and Naina Devi Temple is approximately 300 km, which can be covered in around 8-9 hours by road.

The nearest airport to Naina Devi Temple is Pantnagar Airport, which is approximately 70 km away. From there, one can hire a taxi or take a bus to reach the temple.
