Nainital Zoo

Nainital zoo or Gb pant High altitude zoo in Nainital is not only a popular destination for tourists but also a popular destination for wildlife conservation. The authorities have taken several measures to protect and preserve wildlife in the region.

Situated at an elevation of 2100 meters above sea level, it is located 1.5 km from the Tallital bus stand, Nainital.

History of Nainital Zoo

High altitude zoo was established in 1984 to provide a natural habitat for animals native to the Himalayas. The Zoo was first opened to visitors on June 1, 1995. Later in 2002, the management of the zoo came under the Bharat Ratna Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant High Altitude Zoo Management Society.

It covers an area of 4,693 acres and is located on the Sher ka Danda hill in Nainital.

Animal and Birds of Nainital Zoo

High altitude zoo is home to various species of birds including the Royal Bengal tiger, Himalayan civet, Himalayan monal, Koklass, pheasant and hill partridge, etc.

Zoos run breeding programs to conserve animals that are classified as vulnerable due to habitat loss and hunting. A breeding program for snow leopards is run by the authority to increase the population and raise awareness about the snow leopard.

The koklass pheasant, native to the Himalayas, is bred under the breeding program. Similarly, Himalayan black bears that have been rescued from circuses and private owners are rehabilitated in the high altitude zoo.

Things to keep in mind

No private vehicle is allowed inside the zoo.

Entry fees

Adult( above 12 years)-  Rs 100

Adult Foreigner ( above 12 years) – Rs 200

Free entry- Senior citizens, children, and physically abled.

Timing

10:00 am to 5:00 pm

Last entry: 4:30 pm

The zoo remains closed on Thursday
