Kapilash Hills, located about 26 km from Cuttack, is a serene hill range famous for its natural beauty and religious importance. Rising to around 1,500 feet above sea level, the hills are home to the Kapilas Temple, a sacred shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Known locally as Chandrashekhar Temple, this hilltop destination blends spirituality, mythology, and panoramic views, making it a popular spot for both pilgrims and nature enthusiasts.
Religious Significance
The Kapilash Temple is a major Shaivite pilgrimage center in Odisha. According to local legends, it is believed that the Pandavas had once visited Kapilas during their exile. The presiding deity, Lord Chandrashekhar (a form of Lord Shiva), attracts thousands of devotees during Maha Shivaratri, when the temple complex lights up with grand celebrations.
Apart from the main shrine, several smaller temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Ganesha, and other deities can be found here, adding to the site’s spiritual atmosphere.

Kapilash Hills are surrounded by dense forests, waterfalls, and wildlife, making it a perfect combination of nature and spirituality. The steep climb of 1,351 steps to the temple offers both a physical challenge and a rewarding experience with breathtaking views of the Mahanadi plains.

How to Reach
Kapilas Hills are well-connected by road from Cuttack (26 km) and Bhubaneswar (55 km). Visitors can hire taxis, auto-rickshaws, or take local buses up to the base of the hill. From there, one can either climb the stone steps or drive via a motorable road that leads close to the temple entrance.
The nearest railway station is Cuttack Railway Station, and the nearest airport is Biju Patnaik International Airport, Bhubaneswar.
