Overview and history
Raisen Fort is a historical marvel that was built in the 11th century AD. It was an important center of administration, so let’s dive deep into the rich history and fascinating features of the iconic fort. On the top of the Vindhyachal mountain range, this 800-year-old fort is located on the northwest side of Gondawana. Currently, it is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India.
Built-in the 15th century, Raisen Fort was built by the sultans of Mandu. But with the passage of time, it was passed to the Rajputs. Later, in 1543, Sher Shah Suri captured the fort from Purnamal. During Akbar’s time, Raisen acted as the headquarters of a Sarkar in the Subah of Ujjain in Malwa.
Inside the fort, visitors can find the dargah of Hazrat Pir Fatehullah Shah, a Muslim saint revered by many pilgrims. It is believed that the temple fulfills the wishes of those who offer their prayers at the shrine.
The forts have faced many attacks and sieges, In the 15th century, Sher Shah Suri tried to conquer them many times but failed. The forts are said to have strong ties with the Sallam dynasty of Gondwana, which also built Ginnaurgarh Fort and Fatehgarh Fort in the Bhopal Gondwana kingdom. Till the 16th century, the fort came under the control of Rajputs, the Mughals, and the Nawab ruler of Bengal.
Mystery of Raisen Fort
There are many stories and legends associated with the Raisen Fort. One of the most popular stories is about the paras stone that was believed to be buried inside the fort. It’s believed to have been cared for by Jins, and no one dares to touch it. On the other hand, many people believe there are many ghosts and spirits that roam around the fort. It is said that it is not uncommon to experience strange occurrences and sightings.
Architecture
The fort consists of four palaces: Hawa Mahal, Itradan Mahal, Rohini Mahal, and Bada Mahal. There is a well-organized conservation system with more than 40 wells. The raised fort has a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, and additionally, the mosque of Muslim saint Hazrat Peer Fethullah Shah Baba is visited by people all over the world to pay for their offerings.
