One of the top places to visit in Shimla, Christ church Shimla is the second-oldest church in North India. Situated on the ridge, the church is located at a distance of 2 km from the Shimla railway station and 1.3 km from the Shimla old bus stand. History of Christ church Shimla
The church was commissioned in 1844 and designed in the captivating neo-Gothic style by J.T. Boileau.In 1860, a grand, colossal round clock was donated by Colonel Dumbleton, further enhancing its architectural splendor.
In the past , the church operated a sanctuary catering to the Angican Brish community in Shimla. Now, Christian churches operate under the dioces of Amritsar and belong to the churches of North India. It bears immense historical and religious significance.
Architecture of Christ church Shimla
The height of the tower is 90 feet . It has a magnificent round clock , a metal cross, and an ensemble of six small bells. The silhouette of Christ Church on the tower is visible from miles around Shimla.
The church’s interior is adorned with five captivating stained glass windows on its eastern side. It symbolizes Christian virtues like patience, faith, hope, charity , fortitude, and humility. Being situated in the bustling ambiance , the sanctum of the church offers a tranquil heaven.
Enduring a legacy of the British Raj, adjacent to the church stands a library constructed by James Ransome in 1910. The library is constructed in the typical Elizabethan style and has a collection of ancient scriptures and books. The library adds to the allure of the church complex.
