One of the oldest gateways in Shimla, Gurkha Gate, stands for both architectural and historical significance. The gateway serves as the prime entrance to the Viceregal Lodge, located just 2.5 km away from Shimla Old Bus Stand and 1.5 km from Shimla Railway Station.
Tribute to Gurkha Bravery
It was constructed on Chaura Maidan Road by the British Empire to pay homage to the bravery and loyalty of the Gurkha soldiers. Gurkha soldiers have contributed greatly to British rule.
Lady Curzon, the viceroy of British rule, conceived the idea of building a gateway in their honor. Originally, Gurkha Gate, a stone structure, was a gateway building featuring timber-framed Dhaiji houses constructed to accommodate soldiers. The intricate carving on the imposing gate narrates a story of valor and sacrifice.
From Gurkha Gate, a path leads to the historical Viceregal Lodge, which was once the residence of the Viceroy of India. Today, the Viceregal Lodge houses the Indian Institute of Advanced Study.
