About Mata Bala Sundari Temple
One of the most revered shrines, Mata Bala Sundari Temple, is located in Trilokpur, Sirmaur district, Himachal Pradesh. It is also referred to as the “Vaishno Devi of North India” by many devotees. The famous temple is dedicated to Mata Bala Sundari, who is considered an incarnation of Goddess Durga in her Child form. She is particularly revered by childless couples , as she is believed to bless them with children.
History and mythology
According to local history, the temple was established in 1570 AD by Raja Dip Prakash, the ruler of Sirmaur. A miraculous event is linked to the origin of the temple. Once upon a time, Ram das a trader from the nearby town of Nahan hade a divine vision. In the vision, the deity instructed him to dig a certain spot. When he went and dug, he discovered a Pindi (sacred stone) representing the goddess. This auspicious event finally led to the construction of a temple at that location.
The temple is managed by the descendants of the trader Ram Dass and has close ties to the royal family of Sirmaur.
Architecture of Mata Bala Sundari Temple
The temple’s architecture blends simplicity with spiritual grandeur. Built mainly with stone and lime, the temple features classic North India temple architecture (Nagara style). It has a distinctive Shikara (spire) and intricately carved entrance gateway. A pillared mandapa (hall) for devotees to gather, whereas the Sanctum Sanctorum (Garbhagriha) is the place where the holy pindi is enshrined.
The outer walls of the temple are adorned with mythological carvings and decorative elements.
Best time to visit and festivals
The best time to visit the temple is during the Two grand Navratri melas (festivals) held every year in Chaitra (March April) and Ashwin (Sept.-Oct.). During this time, lakhs of devotees visit the temple from Himachal, Haryana, Punjab, and Delhi.
A fairground and market spring up during festival times, offering food, souvenirs, and spiritual items.
