History and Architecture

Jag Mandir Palace was constructed by three successive Maharanas of the Sisodia Rajputs of Mewar Kingdom dating back to 1551 AD.

Construction of the palace began under the rule of Maharana Amar Singh in 1551 AD. However, it was during the rule of Maharana Jagat Singh I from 1628 to 1652 that it was completed. Architectural brilliance and exquisite craftsmanship showcase a fusion of yellow sandstone and marble.

Nestled amidst the serene Lake Pichola, Jag Mandir Palace is also known as Lake Garden Palace. In the past, it served as a summer retreat and a venue for lavish parties.

Dating back to the time of Emperor Shah Jahan, Jag Mandir Palace holds historical significance. During the refuge of Shah Jahan at the city palace in Udaipur, One of the builders of Jag Mandir, Maharana Karan Singh, provided shelter to Shah Jahan in Gul Mahal, a palace that was nestled within the lake. It was here that Shah Jahan received his royal title before ascending the throne.

In the Sepoy mutiny of 1857, the palace played a crucial role. Families, mainly women, and children, from Neemuch were offered Sanctuary by Maharana Swroop within the walls of Jag Mandir Palace.

Adorned with intricate carving and stunning features, Jag Mandir Palace is a three-story architectural marvel. Zenana Mahal, Garden Courtyard, Gul Mahal, elements, and Kunwar Pada ka Mahal are remarkable structures that showcase the design of the Rajput era.
