In this article, we will delve into the historical and religious importance of the Shrinath temple and the mystical tales that surround it.
History of Shrinath Temple
Construction of the Shrinathji temple started in 1672 AD and was built by a Gowsami priest. The name of the temple, Nathdwara,” signifies the “gate of the lord” the house idol of Lord Krishna that was transported back from Vrindavan to protect it from the wrath of Aurangzeb. When the idols reached the spot on the wheels of the bullock cart, they sank deep into the mud. Recognizing it as the divine will of Lord Krishna, the priest decided to build a temple in this sacred location under the patronage and protection of Maharana Raj Singh of Mewar.
The Architecture and Significance
The architecture of the temple is based on that of Nanda Maharaj in Vrindavan, earning it the name Nanda Bhavan or Nandalaya. The towering shikhara is adorned with a sacred pot with seven flags fluttering alongside the Sudarshana Chakra. It symbolizes the seven houses of Pushti Marg or Ballabh Sampradaya. Black marble is used to sculpt the deity Lord Krishna, who lifts his left hand with his right hand on his waist. Two peacocks, a snake, a lion, and two peacocks are features of the idol.
In the sprawling complex of Shrinathji Temple, there are dedicated areas for food preparation, each serving a unique purpose. Prasad is distributed to all the devotees who come in large numbers. There are around 500 cows that add to the spiritual and cultural significance of the palace.
