About Surya Kund
A thermal hot spring, Surya Kund, is located near the temple of Yamunotri. Its very interesting how, in the midst of the snowy mountains of the Himalayas suddenly a hot water spring emerges up.
According to Hindu mythology, the river Yamuna’s origin near Yamountri is believed to be the daughter of Surya; that’s how the place got it’s name. The holy Surya Kund is surrounded by snowy peaks of Kalindi mountains that add natural beauty to the surroundings.
Many pilgrims who go to Yamountri temple often dip their offerings, including potatoes or rice mixed with salt, in a kund before offering. The hot water boiling at a temperature of nearly 100 C boils the prasad quickly.
