About Mathura Museum
Located near Dampier Park, Mathura Museum is one of the popular archaeological museums that was founded by the then district collector of Marhura, Sir F. S. Growse, in 1874. It comes under the conservation of the government, and you should visit this place if you are playing to visit Mathura.
When it was founded, it was known as the Curzon Museum of Archaeology, which later changed to the Archaeology Museum, Mathura, and finally changed to the Government Museum, Mathura.
The museum houses notable scriptures, paintings, and coins that were mostly discovered by famous archaeologists. Ancient scriptlures from school dating from the 3rd century BC to 12th century AD belong to the Maurya, Sunga, Kushana, and Gupta empires. Among these, the headless figure of Kanishka, buddha and memorials from the Sunga period are worth watching.
Bronze sculptures, pottery, and clay seals are other notables inside the museum. To commemorate the treasure of the ancient past of India, the government of India issued a postage stamp on October 9, 1974, on the centenary of the museum.
