One of the most visited Mathura temples, Dwarkadhish temple is one of the largest and oldest temples located on the bank of the river Yamuna. The temple is known by different names, such as Jagat Mandir or Nija Mandir.
History of Dwarkadhish temple
The temple is dedicated to Lord Dwarkadhish which is considered a form of Lord Krishana. According to mythology, the temple was considered to be built by Lord Krishna’s grandson Vajranbha. But according to historians, the current structure was built by Seth Gokuldas Parikh, the treasurer of Gwalior State, in 1814. He was a great devotee of Lord Krishana and built the temple in honour of Krishana.
Architecture of Dwarkadhish temple
Dedicated to painting and carving, the five-story structure is supported on seventy two pillars. The main shrine is dedicated to Lord Krishana and Radha. The idol is shaped in shiny black stone with a height measuring 2.25 feet. His four hands carry a mace, a conch, a sudharshana charka, and a lotus flower. The shrine also houses images of other Hindu deities apart from the image of Radha-Krishana.
Currently, the administration of the temple is managed by the followers of Vallabhacharya section. Other most notable temple that are situated are Krishna Varaha and Shwet Varaha
Best time to visit
During Janmashtami and Diwali, the temple is filled with a great number of devotees. Its also the best time to see the colours of different shades that are filled.
