Unearthing the History of Battisi Baoli

Discover the intriguing tale behind Battisi Baoli, the largest step-well in Chanderi. Inscriptions reveal that the construction of this architectural marvel was initiated by a visionary named Taghi during the reign of Sultan Ghyasuddin Khilji in 1484 AD. The stepwell project wasn’t limited to just the well itself; it also included the creation of a splendid garden and a mosque, drawing comparisons to the iconic Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. Interestingly, the water level within the well remains constant throughout the year, adding to its mystique.

The largest stepwell in Chanderi, the tale behind Battis Baoli is very intriguing. An inscription revealed the visionary architecture marvel was built by a named Taghi during the reign of Sultan Ghyasuddin Khilji in 1484 AD. The stepwell is designed in such a way that the water level inside remains constant throughout the year. Drawing comparison to the iconic Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem it also included a splendid garden and a mosque. That further adds to its mystique. 

Architectural Splendor and Design

Welcoming visitors, the stepwell derives its name “Battis Baoli” meaning 32 steps with a total of 32 ghats. Shaped in a square shape with a span of impressive 60 feet by 60 feet, the depth of the Baoili is equivalent to four storeys. Two striking gates from the southern direction are the entrance into the Baoli. Offering panoramic views,  exquisite ghat or platforms is accessible through each story.

There is no proper road but a picturesque 2 km walk one must embark to this enchanting oasis. The surrounding natural beauty offers an idyllic path to visit this remarkable historical site and experience the architectural splendor of this ancient stepwell.

From Bhopal: Begin your journey on NH146 and continue for approximately 223 km to reach Chanderi. Follow the signage directing you to Battisi Baoli.

From Gwalior: Take the AH47 and continue for around 220 km until you arrive at Chanderi. From there, follow the directions to Battisi Baoli.
