Overview and History

Bala Quila, also known as Alwar Fort, is a stunning structure that is situated on a hill in the Arvali range of Rajasthan. The stunning architecture tells a fascinating story of the past and is one of the oldest structures in Alwar town. The fort is easily accessible from Alwar town and Alwar Junction Railway Station, which are located at a distance of 10.5 km. 

Fort witnessed the rise and fall of several dynasties, Mughals, Marathas, Jats, and Kachwaha Rajputs ruled this region. The origin of Bala Quila Fort dates from 1550 AD when Hasan Khan Mewati built this fort. During the Mughal era, Babur came to the region, spent an evening there, and even took a significant amount of treasure to gift his son Humayun. Under Akbar’s rule, Jahangir came to the fort when he was banished by his father for his involvement in a plot to kill his courtesan, Abul Fazal. The palace where Jahangir took refuge is known as Salim Mahal. In 1775 AD, the region came under the rule of Kachwaha Rajput Pratap Singh, who laid the foundation of the city of Alwar. 

The architecture of Bala Quila

Bala Quila spreads over a wide area, measuring 5 km in length and 1.5 km in width. It has six impressive gates Andheri Gate, Chand Pol, Suraj Pol, Laxman Pol, and Jai Pol. Elaborate layout and architectural marvels will transport you back in time to an era of grandeur and opulence. 

Offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, Bala Quila boasts 15 large towers, and 51 small towers, that are further surrounded by eight enormous citadels. During times of warfare, these citadels and towers offer a strategic position. 

The walls of the fort are adorned with ancient sculptures and scriptures, they exhibit a distinctive style of Indo- Islamic style of architecture. A fusion of Indian and Islamic architectural elements reflects the artistic prowess of the craftsmen of that time. 

Bala Quila has several other remarkable structures, like Nikumbha Mahal Palace, that have large latticed balconies and Bengal-caned marble pillars. Other notable attractions include the Jal Mahal, Salim Sagar Pond, Suraj Kund, Sita Ram Temple, and Hanuman Temple. Each of these monuments is a testament to the past. 

Climbing uphill can be challenging, It requires some physical stamina because it is captivating during sunrise and sunset when the golden rays of the sun illuminate its walls.
