History of Nakki Lake
Nakki Lake holds immense religious significance for the Garacia tribe of Rajasthan. It’s their ancestor’s home, and during the festive months of April, they offer their nails as a form of consecration. Mahatma Gandhi’s ashes were immersed on February 12, 1948. To honor his memory and his ideals and teachings, Gandhi Ghat was constructed.
According to popular legend, the lake was created when the gods carved it out using their nails to protect themselves from the demon Bashkali. There is another tale that revolves around a challenge put forth by a local king. He gave him the herculean task of digging a lake overnight, and in return, he would marry his daughter. A determined resident, Rasia Balaam, won this challenge, but the king went back on his word.
