Introduction
Malana is one of the most culturally distinctive villages in the Indian Himalayas. Located in a side valley of the Parvati region of Kullu district, Himachal Pradesh, it is known for its traditional customs, mountain setting and long history of community self governance. Although a road now approaches the village, visitors may still need to walk the final stretch, depending on the roadhead and local conditions.
Most travellers reach Malana through Bhuntar, Jari or Kasol, then continue by road towards Malana Gate. Those looking for a more adventurous journey can also reach the village on a longer trek from the Naggar side via Chandrakhani Pass. The direct road route is generally the practical option for a short visit, while the pass crossing requires more time, preparation and trekking experience. Himachal Tourism
The following guide covers the main routes, transport options, walking distance and approximate travel costs. All fares are indicative estimates rather than fixed rates and can change with season, demand and road conditions.
1. Reach Bhuntar or Kullu: The Main Entry Point
Bhuntar is an important transport junction for travellers heading towards Kasol, Manikaran and the Parvati Valley. Kullu is another useful base, particularly for visitors arriving from the direction of Mandi or Manali.
By Air
The nearest airport is Kullu Manali Airport at Bhuntar. From there, travellers can arrange a taxi towards Jari, Kasol or the Malana roadhead. The airport has limited flight connectivity compared with larger airports, so check the current schedule before planning your journey.
Approximate local transport costs
| Transport | Estimated cost |
|---|---|
| Bhuntar to Kasol by taxi | ₹1,200 to ₹2,500 |
| Bhuntar to Kasol by bus | ₹100 to ₹200 |
| Bhuntar to Jari by taxi | Varies by vehicle and negotiation |
These are planning estimates, not live quotations. A taxi booked for the full journey to Malana Gate may cost more than a ride to Kasol or Jari.
By Train
Malana does not have a railway station. Travellers arriving by train generally continue towards Kullu or Bhuntar by road. Chandigarh is one possible railhead for a journey from northern or central India, while Pathankot may suit some itineraries approaching from the west. Neither is immediately close to Malana, and the onward road journey takes several hours.
Indicative onward travel costs
| Route | Estimated cost |
|---|---|
| Chandigarh to Bhuntar by bus | ₹600 to ₹1,200 |
| Chandigarh to Kasol by private taxi | ₹6,000 to ₹9,000 |
Actual prices depend on the service, season, booking date and whether a taxi is private or shared. Check bus schedules and fares before departure.
By Bus: A Common Budget Option
For many travellers from Delhi, an overnight bus towards Bhuntar or Kullu is a convenient starting point. From Bhuntar, continue towards Jari or Kasol using local buses or a taxi. You can then arrange transport to the Malana roadhead.
Indicative costs
| Route | Estimated cost |
|---|---|
| Delhi to Bhuntar by bus | ₹900 to ₹1,800 |
| Bhuntar to Kasol by local bus | ₹100 to ₹200 |
| Kasol to Jari by local transport | Depends on the service |
Private and Volvo bus fares can vary considerably during holidays and peak trekking season. If your bus arrives early in the morning, allow time for onward connections rather than assuming a taxi or local bus will be immediately available.
2. Reach Malana Roadhead
After reaching Jari or Kasol, the next step is to travel towards Malana Gate, the commonly used road approach to the village. The road branches from the Bhuntar to Manikaran route in the Jari area and continues into the Malana valley. Himachal Tourism
Taxi from Kasol or Jari
A local taxi is usually the most straightforward option if you want to reach the roadhead without changing vehicles several times. The road passes through mountain terrain, and travel time depends on traffic, weather and road conditions.
The drive from Kasol to Malana Gate is often quoted at around 20 to 22 km, but confirm the distance to your actual drop off point with the driver.
Indicative taxi costs
| Transport option | Estimated cost |
|---|---|
| Private taxi from Kasol to Malana Gate | ₹800 to ₹1,200, where available |
| Shared jeep or taxi | ₹100 to ₹150 per person, if available |
| Prebooked private cab | May cost ₹2,000 or more, depending on the booking and vehicle |
Lower fares should be treated as indicative rather than guaranteed. Shared vehicles may not operate on demand, and a private taxi may charge extra for waiting time or a return journey. Confirm the total fare and pickup arrangements before setting off.
3. Trek from Malana Gate to Malana Village
The final approach to Malana involves walking along a mountain trail. The exact distance and time depend on where the vehicle can reach and which path is usable on the day. Some travel guides quote a walk of around 4 to 5 km taking 1 to 2 hours, but travellers should verify current conditions locally instead of treating these figures as fixed.
| Trek feature | Practical guidance |
|---|---|
| Walking distance | Varies with the roadhead and trail |
| Walking time | Allow around 1 to 2 hours as a rough planning estimate |
| Difficulty | Uphill mountain walk; can feel moderate for some visitors |
| Village altitude | Approximately 2,650 metres |
| Recommended footwear | Trekking shoes with good grip |
The route passes through mountain slopes and forested surroundings, with views of the valley and nearby peaks. The walk may feel more demanding than the distance suggests because of the gradient, uneven ground and altitude.
Wear sturdy shoes, carry drinking water and keep rain protection handy. Avoid starting late in the day, particularly if you are unfamiliar with the route. After heavy rain or snowfall, ask locally about trail conditions before walking.
4. Budget Travel Option: The Cheapest Route
Travellers on a tight budget can use public transport for the longer journey and reserve a smaller amount for the final road transfer. However, the lowest cost depends on whether a shared vehicle is available when you arrive.
A possible budget route is:
- Take a bus from Bhuntar towards Kasol or Jari.
- From Jari or Kasol, look for a shared taxi or jeep heading towards Malana Gate.
- Walk the remaining distance to the village.
If the shared rides are available at the lower fares quoted by local operators, the final transfer and walk may cost only a few hundred rupees per person. This does not include your journey from Delhi, accommodation, meals or other expenses. If you have to hire a private taxi, your budget will increase substantially.
Before choosing this option, ask about the vehicle’s departure point, waiting time and final drop off location. A cheap shared ride is useful only if it actually connects with your onward plans.
5. Guided Trek Option
A local guide may be useful for travellers who are unfamiliar with the area, particularly when walking conditions are poor or when planning a longer route. Guide charges vary according to the route, group size, duration and whether meals or other arrangements are included.
A figure of ₹1,000 to ₹2,000 may be used as a preliminary budget for some short guided arrangements, but it should not be considered a standard or confirmed rate. Ask the guide what the price covers before booking.
For the direct approach from Malana Gate, a guide may not be necessary for every traveller in favourable conditions. For a multi day trek via Chandrakhani Pass, however, arranging an experienced local guide and confirming the itinerary in advance is a more sensible approach.
6. Alternative Trekking Route: Chandrakhani Pass
Experienced trekkers can reach Malana from the Naggar side by crossing Chandrakhani Pass, which lies at approximately 3,660 metres. Himachal Tourism identifies the pass crossing as an alternative way to reach Malana. Himachal Tourism
Unlike the direct road approach, this is a high altitude trek through forests, mountain meadows and exposed terrain. It is not simply a longer version of the short walk from Malana Gate. Trekkers commonly allow multiple days for the crossing, with the precise itinerary depending on the route, camps and weather.
The Rasol route belongs to a different trekking connection in the Parvati Valley. It can form part of a longer journey involving Malana, Rasol and Kasol, but it should not be confused with the direct road approach or presented as a simple alternative trail from Kasol to Malana.
Choose a pass crossing only if you have adequate fitness, appropriate equipment and reliable local route information. Snow, rain, poor visibility and trail conditions can affect the journey, particularly at higher elevations.
Final Travel Cost Estimate
For travellers starting in Kasol, the main expenses are the road transfer, any guide fee and food during the visit. The following figures are approximate and should be checked locally before travelling.
| Expense | Indicative cost |
|---|---|
| Kasol to Malana Gate by private taxi | ₹800 to ₹1,200, where available |
| Shared jeep or taxi | ₹100 to ₹150 per person, if available |
| Optional guide | ₹1,000 to ₹2,000 for some short arrangements |
| Food and drinking water | ₹200 to ₹400 as a basic allowance |
A budget traveller using shared transport may spend a few hundred rupees on the final approach from the Kasol or Jari area, excluding accommodation and meals. A traveller hiring a private taxi and guide will spend more. The cost of reaching Malana from Delhi or another distant starting point must be added separately.
In short: The most practical way to visit Malana is to travel by road through Jari towards Malana Gate and complete the remaining walk to the village. The Chandrakhani Pass route offers a more adventurous alternative for experienced trekkers, but it requires considerably more time and preparation. Plan your transport in advance, check local trail conditions and respect village customs during your visit.
