About Gangamoola
A birthplace of three significant rivers, Gangamoola is a scenic and spiritual location in the Chikmagalur district of Karnataka, India. The Tunga River, Bhadra River, and Netravathi originate from here and travel through the Western Ghats while supporting the ecosystems and livelihoods of the region.
The region is part of the Western Ghats, which is a biodiversity hotspot and home to diverse plant species, butterflies, birds, and animals like tigers, leopards, and elephants. Ganga Molla, a hill, lies at an altitude of about 1,450 meters (4,760 feet) above sea level and is situated within the Kundremukh National Park. The park is a World Heritage site known for its lush greenery and wildlife.
Goddess Bahagavathi
Ganga Molla, rich in nature, is also considered sacred, with a small shrine dedicated to Goddess Bahagavathi. It is located inside a small cave where devotees in large numbers come to pay their respect and blessings.
River Courses
The River Tunga flows north, passing through Sringeri, Thirthahalli, and Shimoga. It later merges with the River Bhadra at Koodli, near Shimoga, to form the Tungabhadra River.The River Bhadra flows east, passes through Bhadravathi, and joins the Tunga at Koodli.
The River Netravati flows west, passing through Dharmasthala and Mangalore before joining the Arabian Sea.
Accessibility
Ganga Moola is located about 80 km from Chikmagalur. It’s located on the main road between Sringeri and Kudremukh; Ganga Moola can be reached by trekking for about 2 km.
