About Brokpa Tribe
The geographical setting of Ladakh features serene lakes, expansive cold deserts, and ancient Buddhist monasteries. But there is a distinct tribe that is somewhat different in terms of race, language, and culture from the rest of the Tibeto-Mongolian race. The Brokpa tribe, which is considered a remnant of a “pure Aryan race,” are remnants of Alexander the Great.
Living Geography
In 1800, Brokpas lived in an Aryan village comprising Dah, Hano, Darchik, and Garkon. All these villages lie near the line of control along the bank of river Indus and come under the Batalik sector of Ladakh.
Origin and Culture
“Brokpa,” derived from the Sanskrit term Daradas, meaning hillside residents, has historically been portrayed as descendants of Alexander. Who came to the place around the 7th century and departed, leaving some soldiers in the region. They mixed with the local population and established relationships. In the process, those who were born consider themselves the remnants of pure-blood Aryans, or the so-called master race.
The Indo-Aryan characteristics, like long hair, blue eyes, and high cheekbones, set them apart from the rest of the Tibeto-Mongolian race. The Brokpa tribe communicates through a distinct dialect. Dard Shina, locally known as Brokskat
Opening to Tourism
After being isolated for many years, initially 2 villages were open to the outside world, but later in 2010, the remaining other villages also opened. The strategic initiative to promote tourism has increased the number of visitors, like scholars and backpackers, who have different reasons to travel. There are interesting stories about women who travel from diverse countries to conceive with a ladakhi man due to the belief the community has pure aryan race genes. But till now, no genetic or DNA testing has supported the claims.
