In the southeastern part of Kinnaur district, Tidong valley is situated along the bank of the Tidong stream, which finally meets the Sutlej river. The valley lies at an altitude of approximately 2,500 to 3,000 meters and is bounded by rugged Himalayan terrain, flanked by snow-capped peaks, deep forests, and rocky cliffs.
People
The people in the region are known by the name Tidongpas and have a unique identity even among other Kinnauris. They speak a distinct dialect known as Tidongpa and share linguistic similarity with Tibetan and other Kinnauri languages.
Tidong valley
The Tidong valley is known as a “scene of savage grandeur” due to its rugged terrain and steep gorges. Not as famous as Sangla valley the beauty of the valley is untamed.
Although the famous trek-like Charanghati Pass (5,242 meters) connects Tidong Valley to Baspa Valley. The valley serves as a base for treks to significant peaks such as Phawararang (6,349 meters) and Jorkanden (6,473 meters) and offers a great option to explore the majestic Kinnaur Kailash range.
Villages and Inhabitants
The Tidong valley consists of numerous villages like Rarang, Lambar, Charang, Thangi, Kuno and Asrang. These villages are hidden gems for visitors interested in culture and religious heritage.
Charang monastery
Charang monastery located in Charang village, is considered one of the oldest in Kinnaur. The monastery is made using locally available mud, stones and wood. Other things like Buddhist texts, murals and Thangka paintings inside it give information about Buddhism.
