A place of quiet majesty and deep historical significance, Verinag is situated in the foothills of the Pir Panjal range in the Anantnag district of South Kashmir. It is the primary source of the Jhelum River, which is considered one of the most important rivers of the Kashmir valley. The name “Verinag” comes from the Sanskrit word “Virah Nag’, meaning “chief spring.”
Verinag is the first recorded source of the Jhelum River, although hydrologically, it gathers volume from several tributaries downstream.
Geographical Significance
Locally known as Vyeth, Verinag emerges from a deep blue pool at an altitude of about 1,850 meters. At the origin point of the Jhelum River, the water in the river remains crystal clear throughout the year, fed by underground streams that descend from the surrounding Pir Panjal mountains.
History
Verinag spring is enhanced by its stunning Mughal-era architecture. In 1620 CE, the spring was renovated and beautified by Emperor Jahangir. He ordered the construction of an octagonal stone basin and surrounding arched colonnade—both of which still stand today.
Jahangir is said to have remarked, “If there is a paradise on earth, it is here,” a sentiment he likely carried from Verinag. His Persian inscription is still preserved on the stone walls that encase the spring. Later, Shah Jahan added further enhancements to the adjoining garden, forming part of the classic Mughal Charbagh layout.
Cultural and Spiritual Importance
In locals hearts, Verinag has a special place. In Hindu mythology it’s associated with ancient Hindu legends, believed to be linked with Lord Vishnu, and has been mentioned in the Nilamata Purana, an ancient Kashmiri text.
Before the Mughal modifications, the site had religious and ritual significance for the local Kashmiri Pandit community.
This blend of Hindu sacred tradition and Mughal imperial aesthetics makes Verinag not just a spring, but a living symbol of Kashmir’s pluralistic heritage.
