Known for its historic and religious significance, the Basilica of Bom Jesus is one of the oldest famous churches that has the tag of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located in Old Goa, thousands of visitors visit the church each year.
History
A significant symbol of Portuguese colonial influence in Goa, the construction of the church was completed in 1594 and consecrated in 1605. The church houses the relics of St. Francis Xavier, a revered Spanish missionary and one of the founding members of the Jesuit order.
The relics of St. Francis are displayed to the public every ten years, drawing pilgrims and visitors from around the world.
Architecture of Basilica of Bom Jesus
An excellent example of Baroque architecture, the church is decorated with intricate carvings and pillars. Inside the church, the altar is elaborately glided with focus on the relics of St. Francis. The church’s interiors have some notable frescoes and portraits depicting scenes from the lives of St. Francis Xavier and other saints.
Feast of St. Francis Xavier
Every year on December 3rd, the Feast of St. Francis Xavier is celebrated with great devotion.
The event includes a grand procession, prayers, and celebrations, attracting devotees and tourists alike.
Inside the Bascilica there is a smart art gallery that consists of paintings, sculptures, and artefacts.

Entry Fee: Entry is free, but donations are appreciated for maintenance.
