The road from Kalpa to Roghi is more than just a stretch of mountain tarmac. This short journey of approximately 5-6 kilometres offers a dramatic journey into the rustic life of upper Kinnaur. The unforgettable journey offers breathtaking vistas and heart-pounding drops.
Starting Point: Kalpa Village (2,960 m)
Kalpa, perched above the Sutlej River Valley, is the cultural and administrative centre of upper Kinnaur. It is known for its apple orchards, monasteries, and stunning views of the Kinnaur Kailash Range. The road to Roghi begins near the Kalpa Monastery area, winding through narrow village lanes, terraced farms, and patches of pine forest.

As you move upward, there are some sections where there is no guardrail with vertical drops of 10 feet. It becomes more narrow and suicidal in nature. The famous suicide point is a point that is famous among the tourists. It is narrow and carved directly into the mountain face.
Though the term suicide point is a misnomer rooted in tourist drama. It is, however, safe when driven slowly and attentively, especially in dry weather.

Small cars, bikes, and jeeps can navigate the road easily. However during monsoon or snow season, a 4×4 or local driver is recommended.
As you move slowly toward the roghi village, the panoramic views of the Sutlej Gorge on one side and pine-covered cliffs on the other are mesmerising. The road is lined with wildflowers, prayer flags, and often, grazing Himalayan goats.
There are several pull-out spots where you can stop for photos — including unofficial but stunning viewpoints overlooking the valley.
Arrival: Roghi Village (2,870 m)
Roghi is a small, peaceful village with a handful of homes, a local temple, and wide open views. It is less commercialised than Kalpa and offers a more authentic Kinnauri experience. The village is surrounded by pastures, pine groves, and the famous Roghi Cliff (often mistaken as “Suicide Point”).

From the edge of the village, you can walk 10–15 minutes to Roghi Meadows, an open, grassy plateau with some of the best views in the region.
The Kinnaur Kailash Shivling, Jorkanden Peak, and the entire Sutlej gorge are visible from here.
Duration: 20 mins by vehicle; ~1.5–2 hours walk (moderate)
Road condition: Narrow, partially paved, but motorable
Best time: March to November (avoid monsoon and snow season).
