Hikkim village in the Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh stands out as a unique and appealing travel destination for several reasons. Hikkim is a compelling combination of natural beauty and tranquillity. The village is situated amidst mighty Himalayan snow-capped peaks and surrounded by dramatic landscapes, making it a paradise for photography.
Hikkim Post office
Post office is the primary attraction that is often claimed to be the world’s highest. However, its disputable but it’s certain it’s among the highest post offices globally.
Located at an elevation of 4,400 meters (14,400 ft), the post office began its operation on November 5, 1983. Tourists, whenever they come to Hikkim, visit the post office and send a postcard, which is a unique experience in itself.
The post office is seen as a “face of tourism” and an “added advantage” to visiting the village. It’s also a vital connection to the outside world for villagers, especially given the lack of cellphone signal or internet connectivity, and even maintains savings accounts for locals.
Drive Hikkim to Kaza
The drive to Hikkim from Kaza is described as very scenic, representing where the “true beauty of Spiti valley lies.” When you reach the Hikkim village, the sudden green patches of farming fields make a contrast with the barren brown mountains. You will hardly find more than 50 people offering you unparalleled peace and tranquillity. If you are someone who is looking to spend a day at night, then the pollution-free skies provide an opportunity for stargazing and capturing shots of the Milky Way and star trails.
Historical Significance
Hikkim village has another reason to be proud: it was once recorded in the Limca book of records as the world’s highest polling station. It held that title for a long period of time.
Fossils: While Langza is more commonly known for fossils, there are chances of finding fossils in Hikkim. You can even buy them from locals that often show or sell them for a small price but beware: it’s illegal to trade such items according to the government of India.
Hikkim Village Monastery: Though Tangyud Monastery in Komic is larger, Hikkim Monastery is still worth visiting. View from the monastery over the entire village looks very beautiful.
Local Interaction: Hikkim provides an opportunity to talk to the villagers and learn about their lives and cultures. Accommodation is limited to homestays, offering a chance to stay in the homes of simple villagers who are described as very helpful people. This provides a basic but authentic experience. There is also a small cafe near the post office serving local food items, snacks, and tea.
