About Devanahalli Fort
A complete site for history and tourist enthusiasts, Devanahali Fort is an ancient stronghold that is nestled near Bangalore. It is located near Kempegowda International Airport, making it easily accessible for visitors.
History
The fort was constructed in 1501 by a local chieftain, Malla Byre Gowda, under the Vijayanagara Empire. It was later occupied by Hyder Ali in the 18th century and subsequently by his son, Tipu Sultan. The fort, also known as the birthplace of Tipu Sultan, further increases the significance in Karnataka’s history. The fort has been declared a protected monument by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
Architecture
Showcasing robust military architecture of the Vijayanagara era, the fort encompasses an area of 20 acres. Made of stone and mud, it was designed for defensive purposes that feature bastions, massive walls, and gateways.
Cultural and Religious Aspects
Spread over an area of 20 acres, the fort houses temples, including the Venugopalaswamy Temple, Siddalingeshwara Temple, and Chandramouleshwara Temple. The temples are famous for their exquisite carvings and Dravidian architectural style. The temple’s architecture reflects the rich heritage of the Vijayanagara Empire.
