Nestled in Shivajinagar, St. Mary’s Basilica is an old church located in Bangalore. The architecture of the church traces its origins to a small chapel constructed by Abbe Dubois in 1818. Over the years, it underwent further transformations under the guidance of Rev. L.E. Kleiner.
Gothic Architecture
Characterized by arches, ornamental motifs, and an impressive stained glass window, the basilica showcases exquisite Gothic architecture. Its tall spires and multiple columns add to the grandeur of the structure.
Stained Glass Windows
In 1882, a remarkable enhancement happened to St. Mary’s Basilica when stained glass was added. It was imported from Paris. Although temporarily removed during World War II, these windows were meticulously restored in 1947.
Elevation to Basilica Status
In 1973, the elevation of St. Mary’s Basilica to the status of a minor basilica by Pope John Paul VI was a significant event in the history of St. Mary’s Basilica. It marked the sixth basilica in India, symbolizing the church’s historical and spiritual significance.
