History of Sri Krishna Temple
The Kirshan temple was commissioned by Krishnadevaraya in 1513 AD. Dedicated to Bala Krishna, the temple signifies the triumph of Krishanadevaraya over Prataparudra Gajapati, the eastern kingdom’s ruler in Udayagiri (now Orissa). Today , the main idol of Bala Krishana is preserved in the state museum in Chennai.
Architecture
A harmonious blend of sanctums, mandaps, shrines and pavilions, the temple complex is designed in the Panchayathana style. Despite facing the ravage of time and invasion, the main shrine retains its awe-inspiring aura. Intricate carvings adorn the pillars, depicting Yalis, elephant riders, and mythological tales.
The eastern tower, a masterpiece of Vijayanagara architecture, reveals a mesmerizing array of carvings. Warriors with shields, spirited horses, and elephants embellish the tower, showcasing the artistic finesse of the bygone era. The entrance sides are adorned with beautifully sculpted Apsaras, standing on mythical creatures, holding scrolls that narrate the various incarnations of Lord Vishnu.
Krishna bazaar and Kalyani
Adding to the architectural charm, there is an open area with pillared corridors known as Krishna bazaar. Inside the temple there is a temple tank known as Kalyani, surrounded by elegant structure, the place provides a serene space for reflection and contemplation.
