About Kudroli Temple
Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Kudroli Gokarnanatheshwara temple is located in Mangalore, Karnataka. The temple holds great cultural significance and is one of the most visited temples in Dakshina Kannada. It is also part of the region’s famous temple tourism circuit.
Unique Temple Name
The name of the temple is derived from “Kudroli,” after the area where it’s situated. The name is derived from the Tulu word “Kudre,” meaning horse, as the area was once used as a stable for horses during the reign of Tipu Sultan.
Sri Narayana Guru
The temple was built in 1912 by Sri Narayana Guru, a social reformer and philosopher. He envisioned a place of worship that is accessible to all, regardless of caste or community. He follows an egalitarian approach and makes the temple a symbol of social equality and harmony.
Architecture
With a grand Rajagopuram (tower), the temple shows Dravidian-style architecture with intricate carvings and vibrant colours. The interiors of the temple have exquisite sculptures, murals, and a sanctum dedicated to Lord Gokarnanatheshwara (Shiva). It fulfils the idea of Sri Narayana Guru of making it a spiritually enriching destination for devotees of various faiths.
