About Varkala Beach
Varkala Beach, also known as Papanasam Beach, is one of Kerala’s most unique coastal destinations. Located about 50 kilometers north of Thiruvananthapuram and 25 kilometers from Kollam, Varkala stands apart from other beaches in Kerala due to its dramatic red laterite cliffs that rise directly above the Arabian Sea.
The name Papanasam literally means “washing away of sins,” as it is believed that taking a dip here purifies the soul and absolves sins. This combination of natural beauty, spiritual significance, and vibrant beach culture makes Varkala a favorite for both domestic and international travelers.
Geography and Setting
Unlike the flat sandy stretches of Kovalam, Varkala Beach is famous for its towering cliffs that line the coastline. These cliffs, known as the Varkala Formation, are a rare geological feature in southern Kerala and are officially recognized by the Geological Survey of India as a geological monument.
From the cliff-top, travelers are treated to panoramic views of the Arabian Sea, palm groves, and golden sands below. Steps lead down from the cliffside to the beach, creating a unique mix of scenic trekking and seaside relaxation.
Cultural and Spiritual Significance
Varkala is as much a pilgrimage destination as it is a tourist hotspot:
Janardana Swamy Temple – A 2,000-year-old shrine dedicated to Lord Vishnu, located near the beach, is a major spiritual attraction. Pilgrims visit this temple to perform rites for ancestors, especially during the Karkidaka Vavu Bali ritual.
Papanasam Beach – Considered sacred, where people take ritual baths to cleanse sins. The spiritual atmosphere blends seamlessly with the vibrant beach culture.
Sivagiri Mutt – Just a few kilometers away, this ashram was founded by the great social reformer Sree Narayana Guru, adding a layer of cultural depth to Varkala’s identity.
Tourism and Activities
Varkala Beach has become a backpacker’s haven and wellness retreat, offering a balance of leisure, adventure, and spirituality.
Beach Activities – Swimming, sunbathing, and beach walks are popular, thanks to its relatively less crowded atmosphere compared to Kovalam.
Water Sports – Surfing, parasailing, jet-skiing, and paragliding have gained popularity among adventure seekers.
Ayurveda and Yoga – Like Kovalam, Varkala is dotted with Ayurvedic massage centers, yoga schools, and meditation retreats, attracting travelers seeking rejuvenation and alternative therapies.
Shopping and Cafes – The cliffside is lined with handicraft shops, Tibetan jewelry stalls, souvenir stores, cafes, and seafood restaurants serving both local Kerala delicacies and continental cuisine.
Cuisine and Nightlife
Varkala has a cosmopolitan vibe influenced by international backpackers.
Seafood Specialties – Grilled fish, prawns, squid, and Kerala-style fish curry with coconut are staples.
Continental and Fusion Food – Cafes serve wood-fired pizzas, Israeli falafels, Tibetan momos, and fresh fruit juices, catering to global tastes.
Nightlife – Unlike most beaches in Kerala, Varkala has a lively beach nightlife scene, with live music, beachside bonfires, and cultural performances. Alcohol is regulated but available at cliffside cafes.
Best Time to Visit
The ideal time to visit is November to March, when the weather is pleasant, skies are clear, and the sea is calm.
Peak Season (December–February) – Best for beach activities, yoga retreats, and cultural events.
Monsoon (June–September) – Perfect for those seeking solitude and Ayurvedic treatments, as the rains enhance the therapeutic value of herbal therapies.

Varkala is not just about the beach; the surrounding region is equally captivating:
