It was constructed in the year 1100 AD by the Chandela dynasty rulers. The meticulously crafted Chaturbhuj temple sits atop an elevated platform facing west. Symbolizing the four-armed Lord Vishnu, the name of the temple is derived from the Sanskrit term “Chaturbhuj.”
Exquisitely carved doorways are adorned with exquisite sculptures depicting Lord Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma. Contrary to the other temples in Khujraho showcasing erotic carving on their walls, the temple is more focused on a serene and spiritual ambiance.
The inner sanctum of the temple consists of the majestic, 9-foot-tall statue of Lord Shiva. The central deity can be seen directly because of the absence of ambulatory Intricate carving gives it a more beautiful look and exemplifies the skilled craftsmanship of the era.
The tower of the Chaturbhuj temple is modest in comparison to neighboring temples. It has three bands of sculpture on the lower portion that have images of Ashtavasus, Dikhpalas, and mythical lions. On the doorway, the lower part has symbolic representations of a crocodile, a yamuna, and a turtle.
