As part of the Western group of temples, the Matangeshwar temple is a hidden gem and a sacred site that is located at a distance of 1 km away from the Khajuraho bus stand. The remarkable Hindu temple is situated alongside the famous Lakshmana temple.
History and Architecture
The temple was built in the 10th century AD, by a ruler from the Chandela dynasty. He was a devout follower of Lord Shiva. The name of the temple is derived from Lord Shiva’s revered identity as the sage Matang. Matang temple houses some of India’s largest shiva lingams towering to a height of eight feet. Designed with intricate details, the temple is designed and crafted with glistening yellow limestone. The elaborate structure of Ganesh sits on the upper right side. Being one of the ancient temples in Central India, devotees hold this temple in high regard.
The ceilings of the temple display a sculptural artistry but it lacks the intricate sculpture on its exterior and interiors like other Khajuraho temples. On a square plan, Matengeshwar temple draws inspiration from the Brahma temple. The archaeological museum is another structure that lies adjacent to the temple and houses an extensive collection of statues and friezes. It’s an open-air that has a mesmerizing display of sculptural artistry for visitors.
Devotion and Rituals
A daily ritual is performed by devotees to pay homage to lord Shiva at Matangeshwar temple. Linga is a bath with milk, Bilwa leaves, and flowers. At Mahashivratri, the temple witnesses a huge flock of devotees coming to seek prayer and blessing from the divine. On this auspicious day, the lingam is bathed, adorned, and decorated like a human bridegroom as in a wedding ceremony.
