About Panchakki Garden
Panchakki Garden is a beautiful, serene spot that is a perfect example of history with nature. Located in the historical city of Aurangabad, the garden is famous for its Panchakki, meaning “water mill. It is a must-visit where visitors can relax and appreciate the architectural and engineering marvels of the mediaeval period.
Historical Significance
Panchhaki was built in the 17th century by a Sufi saint, Baba Shah Musafir, to grind grain for pilgrims and disciples. He was a Sufi saint who was a spiritual guide to Aurangzeb. At that time, it was an engineering marvel to design such a system that generates energy through water power. Water is sourced from a distant river 6km away through the help of an underground conduit system. Later, a beautiful garden known as Panchakki garden was developed in adjacent. It offers a peaceful retreat where visitors admire mediaeval hydraulic engineering while surrounded by lush greenery.
Tourist Attractions in Panchakki Garden
The Historic Water Mill: The prime attraction of the place is the water mill that speaks about the advanced engineering skills of the Mughal era.
Serene Garden: Lush lawns, beautiful fountains and shaded seating areas are features of well-maintained Panchakki Garden. It’s an ideal spot for relaxation in the midst of lush greenery.
Tomb of Baba Shah Musafir: Thousands of devotees come to the resting place of the saint to offer prayers. The memorial is flanked by a series of fish-filled tanks near a large banyan tree. Apart from its spiritual side, it’s famous among history enthusiasts.
Mosque and Library: The complex also houses a mosque and a library with rare manuscripts and books from the Mughal period.
Underground Water Channel: Watching how the whole intricate system brings down water from a distant source is a fascinating aspect of mediaeval technology.
