The town hall museum located at Shaniwar Peth presents the rich heritage of Kolhapur. Offering a captivating journey through the region’s history and culture, the museum is a magnificent building adorned with neo-Gothic architectural elements.
It’s adorned with fountains and exotic plant species that provide a tranquil retreat amidst the hustle and bustle of the city.
Architecture
The town hall museum has served as an administrative office during the British era. It was built between 1872 and 1876 under the supervision of British engineer Charles Mant. The building reflects a blend of colonial and indigenous architectural styles with neo-Gothic architectural elements. Later, the structure was converted into the residence of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj’s diwan. In 1945, the structure was converted into a museum.
Preserving Treasures from the Past
During the excavation of hill, several excavations were found dating back to the Satavahana and Shilahara-Bahmani periods. Over the years, the collection expanded to include paintings by Loofrtists, enriching the museum’s repertoire.
From figurines depicting Greek deities like Poseidon to pottery fragments and beads, the museum encompasses a diverse collection of artifacts. The Famous Mahalakshmi temple is among the most notable sculptures to see. The coins from Brahampuri civilization offer insights into the Kohlaur’s storied past. Coins from the Brahmapuri civilization and a striking portrayal of a female attendant bearing the fly-whisk from Panhala are other things to admire.

Showcasing weaponry from bygone eras, there is a museum gallery dedicated to arms. It presents the cultural heritage of the region to visitors.

The museum’s surroundings are as captivating as its exhibits, with the Chhatrapati Pamela Raje hospital standing as a testament to Mant’s architectural prowess. Adorned with Corinthian columns and intricate carvings, the hospital entrance exudes grandeur, offering a glimpse into Kolhapur’s architectural heritage.

The town hall museum is open to the public from 10.30 AM to 1 PM and 1.30 PM to 5.30 PM, barring Mondays.
