About Saptashrungi Devi Mandir
Saptashrungi Devi Mandir is a Hindu temple situated near Nanduri village. At a distance of 26 km from Vani and 65 km from Nashik, the temple is one of Maharashtra’s prominent pilgrimage sites. In this article, we will embark on a journey to explore the divine essence of this revered temple.
The temple lies atop the cliff with an altitude of 1,230 m. Dedicated to Goddess Saptashrungi, Saptashrungi Devi Temple stands as a testament to faith and devotion.
The Enigmatic Legend
The temple’s significance traces back to ancient Hindu mythology, linking it to the tale of Goddess Sati. Legend has it that one of Sati’s limbs, her right arm, fell at this very spot, making it one of the ‘three and a half Shakti Peethas’ of Maharashtra. It’s believed that the presiding deity, Mahishasur Mardini, annihilated the demon Mahishasur at this sacred site.
Divine Architecture and Iconography
With remarkable architecture and craftsmanship, the temple is a two-stories shrine. A self-manifested idol of Goddess Saptashrungi is carved on a rock face. The height of the idols is about 10 feet and is adorned with 18 hands wielding various weapons. The temple’s surroundings, enveloped by seven peaks, resonate with spiritual energy, earning it the name ‘Saptashrungi Mata.
Vibrant Festivals and Celebrations
A nine day celebration, Chaitrosav is celebrated with great fervor and grandeur. It begins on Rama Navami and culminates on Chaitra Poornima. Dushhera and Navratri adorn the temple with joyous festivities. Millions of devotees seeking blessings, especially women yearning for children, come to the temple.
Accessible Pilgrimage
To ensure easy accessibility for all devotees, there are multiple options available to visitors. Modern infrastructure offers a motorable road and a trolley system or you can traditionally access via steps cut into the mountains. It takes around 45 minutes to reach the shrine.
