About Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary
Spread over an area of 131 km2, Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary is nestled in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra. It was established in 1984 primarily to protect the habitat of the Indian Giant Squirrel, the state animal of Maharashtra.
Biodiversity: The sanctuary boasts a rich variety of flora and fauna, including species like leopards, sambar deer, barking deer, wild boar, and the Indian pangolin. It’s also a paradise for birdwatchers, with species such as the Malabar Grey Hornbill, Quaker Babbler, and the Indian Scimitar Babbler.
Bhimashankar Temple: Bhimashankar Temple lies at the heart of the sanctuary. It’s one of the 12 Jyotirlingas that is dedicated to Lord Shiva. the temple adding spiritual dimension attracts pilgrims from all over India
Best Time to Visit
October to May: The best time to visit the temple is from October to May, when the weather is perfect for wildlife spotting, trekking, and temple visits.
Monsoon Season (June to September): During monsoon season, the sanctuary landscape transforms into green. Numerous waterfalls come out, turning the place heaven for nature lovers. Take precaution during trekking, as it can be challenging due to slippery trails.
How to Reach
By Air: The nearest airport is Pune International Airport, approximately 110 km away.
By Rail: Pune Railway Station is the closest major railhead.
By Road: Bhimashankar is well connected by road. It’s about 110 km from Pune and 200 km from Mumbai. State transport buses and private taxis are available from these cities.
Accommodation
The option of staying near the sanctuary is limited so look in nearby towns like Manchar or Pune that have options for a range of hotels and lodges. Visitors can opt for the Forest Department’s rest houses but confirm before coming
Activities
Trekking: The Bhimashankar Trek is the most popular trek near the sanctuary. It can be reached via two routes.
Shidi Ghat (Ladder Route) It’s a challenging path that takes around 3.5 hours to ascend. The trek is not advisable for beginners.
Ganesh Ghat: This route is moderate as compared to Shidi Gate and takes around 4 hours to reach the top.
Wildlife Safari: To explore the rich biodiversity, guided tours are available for visitors.
Birdwatching: Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary is a hotspot for birdwatchers. You can spot multiple avian populations around.
Travel Tips
Permits: Obtain necessary permits from the Forest Department for trekking and wildlife exploration. To visit a wildlife sanctuary, a necessary permit is required from the forest department.
