About Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary
Spread over an area of 52.71 square kilometres, Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary is nestled in the heart of Maharashtra’s Konkan region. The sanctuary is located between Roha and Murud in the Raigad district.
It’s as famous as others but boasts rich biodiversity, lush landscapes and a tranquil escape from urban chaos. Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary is a perfect destination for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers. Before declaring it a wildlife sanctuary in 1986, the sanctuary was for private hunting grounds of the Siddis of Janjira. They were the rulers of the Murud-Janjira region who used forests for hunting and also preserved them to sustain the kingdoms.
After Independence, Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary was used for timber and resource extraction, which led to demand for conservation. Finally, in 1986, it was declared a sanctuary by authority to protect its unique biodiversity. Today, Phansad stands as a testament to the successful transition from a hunting reserve to a protected ecological zone.
