About Umngot River

The Umngot River, flowing through Dawki town in Meghalaya’s West Jaintia Hills, is one of the most iconic natural wonders of Northeast India. It is world-famous for its crystal-clear emerald waters, where boats appear as if they are floating in the air.

Surrounded by lush green hills, rustic Khasi villages, and a peaceful environment, the river offers a surreal travel experience that has made it one of the most photographed destinations in Meghalaya.

Attractions and Activities

The Umngot River is perfect for boating, which allows visitors to witness its transparent waters up close. The river also supports kayaking, camping, and fishing, making it a hub for adventure seekers. On clear days, the water is so transparent that the riverbed stones and pebbles are distinctly visible, giving the illusion of glass.

The banks of the river near Dawki also provide a serene spot for picnics and photography, with the Indo-Bangladesh border lying just a short distance away, adding a unique cross-cultural touch to the experience.

Cultural and Local Significance

For the local Khasi community, the Umngot River is more than a tourist attraction; it is a source of livelihood through fishing, boating, and eco-tourism. Festivals and local fairs often take place near Dawki, highlighting traditional food, crafts, and music.

The river also acts as a natural link between India and Bangladesh, and small trade activities still occur near its banks.
