About Vantawng Falls
Tucked away in the lush green folds of Mizoram’s highlands, Vantawng Falls is the state’s tallest and most spectacular waterfall. Plunging dramatically from a height of about 229 meters, this white curtain of water is a breathtaking sight, framed by dense tropical forests and bamboo groves. Named after a legendary swimmer from local folklore, Vantawng Falls is more than just a natural wonder — it is a symbol of Mizoram’s raw beauty and the harmony between its people and nature.
Location and Accessibility
Vantawng Falls is located near Thenzawl town in Serchhip district, about 137 km from Aizawl. The falls are part of the Vanva River, which flows through the lush hill ranges of central Mizoram.
History and Folklore
The falls are named after Vantawnga, a legendary swimmer renowned for his incredible agility and grace in water. According to Mizo folklore, he could swim like a fish and perform remarkable stunts in the swirling pools beneath the waterfall. Tragically, his life was cut short when a drifting log struck him while he was performing near the falls. The name Vantawng is thus a tribute to his unmatched swimming skills and his love for the river.
Geography and Landscape
The Vanva River, fed by numerous hill streams, makes a dramatic drop at Vantawng Falls, creating a foamy cascade against a backdrop of evergreen forests. The falls are surrounded by steep, rocky slopes, making it impossible to reach the base directly. Instead, visitors can admire the falls from a viewing tower strategically built to provide unobstructed views of the cascade and the lush valley
From this vantage point, you can see:
The milky-white torrent of water tumbling down in multiple stages.

Mist rising from the base, adding a dreamy quality to the scene.
