Sultanpur bird sanctuary, located 16 kilometers from Haryana’s Gurgaon district, is a lovely weekend destination for Delhi residents. Spread over an area of 143 square kilometers, situated on the Gurgaon-Farukh Nagar road, it attracts a variety of migratory birds in the winter season. The dry deciduous and tropical forest of Jamun, banyans, and acacia provides a stunning backdrop for visitors. it’s a marshy land where water accumulates in the rainy season and dries out in the summer season.
History
Sultanpur was named after Rajput Chauhan Sultan Singh, Harsh Dev Chauhan’s great-grandson. The Sultanpur bird sanctuary is a lake that was designated as a sanctuary under Section 8 of the Punjabi Wildlife Preservation act. The potential of the lake was recognized when Peter Jackson, working for the IUCN, saw this place as a main attracting force for birds.
it was designated as a Ramsar wetland site in 2021.
