About Kumbakkara Waterfall
Kumbakkarai is a serene and less commercialised waterfall located near Periyakulam in the Theni district of Tamil Nadu, India. It is a popular stop for those travelling to who are searching for a quiet retreat. It’s situated about 8 kilometres from Periyakulam and approximately 80 kilometres from Madurai.
The falls are fed by the River Pambar, which originates in the Kodaikanal hills. It cascades into two stages. In the first stage, it forms small pools and rock formations, where water collects before flowing downstream. It’s ideal for bathing and relaxing. In the second stage, water flows down powerfully into a natural basin.
The surrounding forests are rich in biodiversity, with a variety of plants, birds, and butterflies adding to the charm of the location.
Best Time to Visit
The ideal time to visit is during the post-monsoon season (October to March), when the waterfalls are in full flow and the weather is pleasant.
The monsoon season (June to September) brings heavy rainfall, making the falls more powerful but sometimes less accessible.
