About Sholayar Dam
One of the largest dams in the state, Sholayar Dam, is a prominent and scenic dam located in the Valparai region of Tamil Nadu, India. The dam is a part of the Parambikulam Aliyar Project and is a popular tourist attraction and a key engineering marvel. It is an essential part of the hydroelectric projects supplying electricity to Tamil Nadu and Kerala.It’s the second-largest rock-fill dam in Asia and has a vast storage capacity.
History
The Solaiyar Dam is a key component of the Solaiyar Hydroelectric Project (HEP), which includes the main Solaiyar Dam, the Solaiyar Flanking Dam, and the Solaiyar Saddle Dam. The main dam was inaugurated in 1965, with the Solaiyar Flanking Dam completed in 1964 and the Solaiyar Saddle Dam following in 1965.
As part of the Parambikulam Aliyar Project, the Solaiyar Dam serves as a vital reservoir. The main dam stands 66 meters tall, spans a width of 430 meters, and has a total length of 430.60 meters. Excess water from the reservoir is directed into the Parambikulam Reservoir via the saddle dam.
The dam is nestled amidst dense forests, mist-covered hills, and tea plantations, offering visitors breathtaking views and a serene atmosphere. The area around the dam is ideal for nature enthusiasts, with opportunities for trekking and exploring nearby forest trails. Wildlife sightings, including elephants and deer, are common in the surrounding forested areas.
Best Time to Visit : The best time to visit is during the monsoon and postmonsoon months, from June to December , when the dam is full and the surrounding area is lush and vibrant.
How To Reach
Sholayar Dam is located about 20 km from Valparai and can be reached via a scenic drive through winding roads and tea estates.
