Kamet, the second-highest peak after Nanda Devi, is a beautiful mountain situated in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. At a height of around 7,816 m, it marks the boundary between the Chamoli district and Tibet.
Origin of word “Kamet”
The word Kamet is believed to originate from the tibetan language, which means grandmother of a sacred snow chain. The british mountaineer Frank Smythe has written in his book ‘Kamet Conquered’ that the word kamet comes from the Tibetan word ‘Kangmed’.
Lying to the north of Himalayas, Kamet forms a part of Zanskar range that starts from the Suru river and ends in upper Karnali river. Kamet is surrounded by beautiful peaks, glaciers and rivers. In the northwest of Kamet, Mukut Parbatin lies, while in the south-, Abi Gamin and Mana give company.
Peaks and Galciers Around Kamet
On the western slopes of Kamet, Abi Gamin, and Mukut Parbat lies the West Kamet glacier, whereas the East Kamet glacier is on the eastern side of Kamet and Mana. East of Abi Gamin flows Raikhana glacier and joins East Kamet Galcier
East Kamet Glacier, West Kamet Glacier, and Raikana glacier form the system of glaciers These are major source of rivers like Sarasawati and Dhauliganga River, which is a major tributary of Alaknanda river. West Kamet Glacier drains into the Saraswati River, while the East Kamet Glacier drains into the Dhauliganga River.
