About Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary
Located in the Kollam district of Kerala, the Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary is a hidden gem of the Western Ghats, forming part of the Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve.
Established in 1984, it spans 172 square kilometers of rich tropical evergreen and semi-evergreen forests. The sanctuary derives its name from the rare tree species Chenkurinji (Gluta travancorica), which grows abundantly here. With its pristine landscape, rich biodiversity, and the serene Shendurney Reservoir formed by the Parappar Dam, the sanctuary is both an ecological treasure and a peaceful retreat for travelers.
Flora and Fauna
Shendurney is renowned for its evergreen forests, home to diverse plant species, including medicinal herbs and orchids. Wildlife sightings include elephants, tigers, leopards, gaur, sambar deer, Malabar giant squirrels, and Nilgiri langurs.
The sanctuary is also a haven for birdwatchers, with more than 250 species of birds, such as the Malabar Grey Hornbill, Great Eared Nightjar, and rare migratory species. Reptiles, amphibians, and vibrant butterfly populations further enrich the sanctuary’s ecosystem.
