About Balukhand-Konark Wildlife Sanctuary
The Balukhand-Konark Wildlife Sanctuary, located between Puri and Konark along the Bay of Bengal coast, is one of the most unique wildlife sanctuaries in Odisha. Spread across 72 square kilometers, it is characterized by sandy beaches, casuarina plantations, and patches of coastal forest.
Established in 1984, the sanctuary serves as a natural buffer between the sea and inland settlements while providing a safe haven for several wildlife species.
Biodiversity and Attractions
The sanctuary is home to a variety of fauna, including blackbucks, spotted deer, jackals, hyenas, and monitor lizards. One of its highlights is the blackbuck population, which freely roams the grasslands near the coast.
The casuarina and cashew plantations along with patches of sal and neem trees create a balanced ecosystem for birds and animals. The coastal stretch also attracts a range of resident and migratory birds, making it a paradise for bird watchers.

Visitors to Balukhand-Konark can experience a blend of wildlife, beaches, and cultural heritage, as it lies on the route between Jagannath Puri Temple and the Konark Sun Temple. Walking or cycling through the sanctuary offers an opportunity to spot deer and other animals in their natural setting. The serene beaches along this stretch, less crowded compared to Puri beach, provide a peaceful escape.

The sanctuary is easily accessible as it lies along the Puri–Konark Marine Drive Road. The nearest railway station is Puri Railway Station (10 km), while the Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar (65 km) is the nearest airport. Local taxis and buses frequently connect Puri and Konark, making travel convenient.
