About Dumboor Lake
Dumboor Lake, located in the Gandacherra subdivision of Dhalai district in Tripura, is one of the most scenic and enchanting water bodies of Northeast India. Spanning over 41 square kilometers, this vast lake is named after the small drum-shaped “Dumboor” used in local folk music, as its shape resembles the instrument.
Surrounded by lush green hills, thick forests, and numerous small islets, Dumboor Lake is a paradise for nature lovers, birdwatchers, and peace seekers. It is also the origin of the Gumti River, which further enhances its significance in the region’s geography and ecology.
Natural Beauty and Features
The lake is dotted with 48 small islands, each adding to its charm and offering picturesque views for visitors. During winters, Dumboor becomes a haven for migratory birds that fly in from distant regions, making it a hotspot for birdwatching enthusiasts.
The surrounding vegetation is rich with tropical flora, and the crystal-clear waters of the lake reflect the rolling hills, creating postcard-like scenery. A boat ride across the lake allows travelers to explore the islets and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere.
Cultural and Historical Significance
Dumboor Lake also carries religious importance as it hosts the ‘Poush Sankranti Mela’ every year in January, which attracts thousands of devotees and tourists.
This fair is deeply rooted in Tripura’s cultural traditions and is celebrated with great enthusiasm, blending spirituality with festivity. The lake’s proximity to ancient tribal settlements adds to its cultural richness, making it not just a natural attraction but also a site of traditional importance.
