About Balpakram National Park
Balpakram National Park, located in the South Garo Hills of Meghalaya, is one of the most enchanting and mysterious wildernesses in Northeast India. Spread over an area of around 220 sq. km, the park is often compared to the Grand Canyon of the United States due to its dramatic cliffs, deep gorges, and undisturbed forest cover.
The name Balpakram in the Garo language means “land of perpetual winds,” and the place is deeply entwined with local mythology, spiritual beliefs, and folk legends.
The Garos believe Balpakram to be the abode of spirits, and many sacred sites within the park hold cultural significance. Along with its mysticism, the park is also a recognized biodiversity hotspot, hosting rare and endangered species of flora and fauna, making it a paradise for nature lovers, trekkers, and wildlife enthusiasts.
Attractions and Experiences
Biodiversity Hotspot: Balpakram is home to Asian elephants, barking deer, wild buffalo, clouded leopards, marbled cats, and the rare red panda. Birdwatchers can spot over 200 species of birds, including the hornbill and peacock-pheasant.
Mythological Sites: Local legends tell of Areng Patal, a mysterious pit believed to be a resting place for departed souls, and Matchru, a rock said to bear the footprints of spirits.
Scenic Landscapes: The park features rolling meadows, deep canyons, roaring rivers, and cliffs with breathtaking viewpoints overlooking the forested valleys.

Best Time to Visit
The ideal time to explore Balpakram is October to April, when the weather is pleasant and wildlife sightings are frequent. Monsoons (June to September) bring heavy rainfall, making trekking difficult but adding lush greenery to the landscapes.
How to Reach
By Air: The nearest airport is Shillong Airport (Umroi), about 220 km away, while Guwahati Airport (200 km) offers better connectivity with major Indian cities.
By Train: The closest railway station is Guwahati Railway Station, around 225 km away.
By Road: Balpakram can be reached by road from Shillong (220 km), Tura (90 km), and Guwahati (200 km) via NH 217 and local roads. Shared taxis and buses are available, but hiring a private vehicle is recommended for convenience.
